Mix live show audio in the browser
Open Live gives every input its own channel strip: a fader, on, off or audio-follows-video, pre-fade and after-fade listen, and sends to group and aux buses. The main bus carries an EBU R128 loudness meter, so you check levels against your delivery spec by reading them, not by ear.

How to mix a live show's audio with Open Live
Open Live is the production API, Open Live Studio is the browser controller, and Strom is the media engine that does the mixing. Everything below is in the released Open Live v0.6.0 and Open Live Studio v0.7.0.
- 1
Start an Open Live production
The quickest route is the managed Open Live at openlive.apps.osaas.io. To run the parts yourself on OSC you create a CouchDB database, Open Live (it needs DatabaseUrl and StromUrl, the address of a Strom engine) and Open Live Studio (it needs OpenLiveUrl).
- 2
Add your sources
Each source is an SRT, EFP, WHIP or HTML input. Every input in the production gets its own channel strip in the IN section of the audio panel.
- 3
Set levels with the faders
Each strip has a fader and a peak meter. The MAIN strip in the OUT section is the programme mix.
- 4
Choose on, off or AFV per input
With audio-follows-video (AFV), an input comes up when you cut to its picture and goes down when you cut away, using ramp times you set.
- 5
Listen before it goes out
Press PFL on a strip to hear it before its fader, or AFL to hear it after. One cancels the other on the same strip. The monitor bus has its own fader and mute.
- 6
Route submixes and feeds
Assign inputs to group buses (GRP) to ride several at once before they reach MAIN. Aux buses are separate mixes, for example a talkback feed for presenters (IFB) or a recording feed, with a send level per input.
- 7
Check loudness on MAIN
The MAIN strip shows momentary loudness, an integrated loudness readout and a target line at -23 LUFS. A true peak above -1 dBTP latches the meter until you click it. Reset the integrator when the programme starts.
Gain, EQ, gate and compression per channel
The Open Live v0.6.0 API sets processing per channel: input gain (-20 to +20 dB), a high-pass filter (20 to 500 Hz), a gate, a compressor and a 4-band parametric EQ. The main bus has a compressor, a 4-band EQ and a limiter. A value outside its range is rejected, not clamped. Settings are saved with the production and applied again when it is activated.
In Open Live Studio v0.7.0, press FX on an input strip or on MAIN to open the Processing panel, with an on/off toggle and Reset for each stage. You can also send the same settings over the API or the controller WebSocket (AUDIO_PROC_SET). Turning the high-pass filter on or off takes effect on the next activation; its frequency changes live.
Watch: the channel strip in Open Live Studio
A 56-second walkthrough of Open Live Studio 0.7: the FX button, the per-channel strip and processing on the main mix. It also shows ISO recording per input, which needs Open Live backend v0.7.0; on 2026-10-27 the OSC stable channel still ran v0.6.0.

Connect your AI agent to the OSC MCP server and give it the prompt below. It creates the database, Open Live and Studio and wires them together. You supply the Strom address.
Prompt
Set up Open Live on Open Source Cloud for a live show. Create a CouchDB instance. Then create an Open Live instance with DatabaseUrl from that CouchDB and StromUrl set to <my Strom URL>. Then create an Open Live Studio instance with OpenLiveUrl pointing at the Open Live instance. Check that each one is running before you create the next, and give me the Studio URL.
The agent should not pick a Strom address for you. If you do not have one yet, tell it to stop and ask. The mixing itself is yours, in Studio.
Cost ceiling: about 10 tokens a day for each of the three catalog services, 30 in total. Strom is not one of them. The Personal plan (15 EUR a month) includes 40 tokens a day.
Machine-readable recipe (JSON)Open source, every part
Open Live, Open Live Studio and Strom are open source Eyevinn repositories, and your productions live in your own CouchDB. You can run the same stack anywhere the containers run.

Questions
Does Open Live measure EBU R128 loudness?
Yes, on the main bus: momentary loudness, integrated loudness, a -23 LUFS target line and a true peak latch at -1 dBTP. It measures the mix. It does not normalise it for you.
What is audio-follows-video?
An input set to AFV fades up when you cut or transition to its picture and fades down when you cut away. The ramp up and ramp down times are set per production.
Can I make a separate mix for presenters or a recording?
Yes. Aux buses are mixes separate from MAIN. Each input has a send level per aux bus, and each aux bus has its own master fader.
Can I EQ or compress a channel?
Yes: gain, high-pass filter, gate, compressor and 4-band EQ per channel, plus compressor, EQ and limiter on the main bus. Open Live Studio v0.7.0 shows them behind the FX button on each strip, and the Open Live v0.6.0 API accepts the same settings.
Do I need an audio console?
No. The mix runs in Strom and you control it from a browser. You still need your sources, for example an SRT encoder or a browser sending WHIP.
