Host your own Bluesky PDS

Run your own Bluesky Personal Data Server on open source, sign in to it from the Bluesky app and manage it from your browser. Follow the steps below, or have your AI agent set it up for you.

How to host a Bluesky PDS on OSC

From an empty account to signing in from the Bluesky app, with no server of your own to install.

  1. 1

    Store an admin password

Open Bluesky Personal Data Server in OSC, go to Service secrets and create a secret holding a strong admin password. The PDS uses it for admin tasks such as creating invite codes.

  2. 2

    Create the PDS

Click Create pds, give it a name and pick the secret as AdminPassword. Leave DnsName empty for now. When the instance card turns green, copy its URL.

  3. 3

    Create an invite code

Send a POST request to your PDS URL plus /xrpc/com.atproto.server.createInviteCode, with Basic auth (user admin, your admin password) and the body {"useCount": 1}. The response holds the code. PDS Admin in step 6 does the same from a browser.

  4. 4

    Create your account

In the Bluesky app, start creating an account, choose a custom hosting provider and enter your PDS URL. Then enter the invite code, your email and a password.

  5. 5

    Use your own domain (optional)

To use your own domain, add a wildcard TLS certificate under My Apps, Domains, point a wildcard DNS A record at the address OSC gives you, and set DnsName on the PDS. The docs page for the PDS has the full steps.

  6. 6

    Add PDS Admin

Create a PDS Admin instance with your PDS URL as PdsUrl. It gives you a browser UI to create invite codes, list accounts and check server status, instead of raw API calls.

Have your AI agent set up your Bluesky PDS

Connect Claude Code, Codex or any MCP client to https://mcp.osaas.io/mcp and give it the prompt below. The agent creates a bluesky-social-pds instance, which needs a name and AdminPassword (DnsName, EmailSmtpUrl and EmailFromAddress are optional), waits for it to run, then creates an eyevinn-pds-admin instance with the PDS URL as PdsUrl and hands back both URLs.

Prompt for your agent

Set up my own Bluesky PDS on Open Source Cloud. Store a strong admin password as a service secret, create a bluesky-social-pds instance named mypds that uses it as AdminPassword, and wait until it is running. Then create an eyevinn-pds-admin instance with the PDS URL as PdsUrl. Give me both URLs and tell me which secret holds the admin password.

The agent does not create your Bluesky account. You do that in the Bluesky app (step 4), because it needs your own email and password.

Each of the two instances costs at most 10 tokens a day. The free plan's 100 one-time tokens run both for about 5 days, and Personal (40 tokens a day) runs both continuously.

You can move your account later

The AT Protocol lets you move an account to another PDS without the old server's involvement. The server itself is the open source bluesky-social/pds, so you can run the same software anywhere else.

Questions about hosting a Bluesky PDS

What is a Bluesky PDS?

A Personal Data Server is your home on the AT Protocol network. It stores your posts and your identity and talks to the rest of the network for you. Hosting your own means your account lives on a server you control.

Do I need a VPS or my own server?

No. On OSC the PDS runs as a managed instance of the open source bluesky-social/pds. You create it in the browser, or your AI agent creates it over MCP.

How do I create an invite code for my PDS?

Send a POST request to your PDS URL plus /xrpc/com.atproto.server.createInviteCode with Basic auth (user admin and your admin password) and the body {"useCount": 1}. Or create the code in PDS Admin.

Can I use my own domain?

Yes. Add a wildcard TLS certificate for your domain in OSC, point a wildcard DNS A record at the address OSC gives you, and set DnsName on the PDS. The docs page for the PDS has the full steps.

What does it cost?

The PDS and PDS Admin each cost at most 10 tokens a day. The free plan's 100 one-time tokens cover both for about 5 days; Personal, at 40 tokens a day, runs both continuously.
